The BIM Manager

Why?  This is a very common question, especially among the partners in a firm who have to face this new need, this new charge in a project in which the various professional orders have not yet grasped the importance of this role and whose honorary decrees do not reflect the reality of the projects with this new much needed ressource

Why should I hire a BIM Manager? Do my best Revit user can take this role while he is assigned to the production on the project? What does he do exactly? Do I have to assign a different BIM Manager on each of my projects? What are his tasks?

Before answering these questions, we should define a basic naming convention well understood, especially in the names used for the different roles.

Here is an image that can define a few different roles in an office. In this example, we speak of a firm that has two geographically separated offices.

Organisation Gestionnaire BIM

The BIM Director is responsible for standardization between offices of the same firm.  He ensures that everything that is done in an office is the same as the other (concerning BIM of course).  He is the connection point between the BIM Managers. In this case, the 3 people are working together to find solutions to the needs of the firm.  He is responsible for making decisions for the firm in general for everything related to Revit and BIM strategy, for the template etc …

The BIM Manager, whose tasks are defined below, is often the only person dedicated to BIM in the office today…  Sadly, most offices do not have the opportunity to take their best Revit user who, in addition, have a good architectural experience for example and place him full time in this niche. Or, nobody wants to take this role because, being dedicated to BIM, the architects, engineers and technologists could not really participate in the production of the project by themselves, really participating at the creation and production of the model. Also, it is a very rewarding role when the manager comes to save the day by solving a problem or finding a solution, but sometimes difficult to play: when all goes well, users do not think it is through the planning of the BIM Manager, they take for granted that it is the natural way of the software to work. Although, when it goes wrong, The BIM Manager is often pointed to as responsible for the problem he should have expected … We must have a good personality to play this role.

Software

  • Manage BIM software products.
  • Incorporate new versions
  • Evaluate new software and technology.
  • Appropriate support in needs related to BIM technology and IT infrastructure.


Standards and Templates

  • Responsible for the development, implementation, application and documentation of BIM standards.
  • Responsible for work processes.
  • Setup and maintain / update the libraries of the company and its various templates.


Management

  • Chair the BIM committee that allows the transmission of knowledge between different teams, keep the minutes and distribute them.
  • In charge of the newsletter BIM / Revit Office.
  • Perform various reports.
  • Assess current work processes, strategies, projects, personnel, etc.


Training and support

  • Internal and continuing training
  • Technical guidance to new employees
  • On-site support with ticket system if possible.
  • Establishing a knowledge base or wiki.


Research and development

  • Web, blogs, literature, interviews, workshops and conférences. He must be aware of what is happening.
  • Identification of trends and opportunities.
  • Evaluate and make recommendations on software, plugins etc …


Involvement within industry organizations and public relations.

  • Autodesk University, Revit Technology Conference
  • Local User Groups (BIM Group Quebec) and international
  • Contact with national resellers and Autodesk staff.

  • Future planning for potential uses of BIM,
  • Sustainable Design (LEED), 3D renderings and facilities management (BOMA).
  • Liaison with other consultants, engineers and architects (consortium).
  • Other Software BIM as Navisworks, Showcase etc …

Personality and knowledge required

  • Open-minded, Professional, Logical, Sociable, Good teaching skills, Calm, Leader,
  • Bilingual (in Quebec at least, we must speak french and be fluent in english)
  • Advanced knowledge of his discipline (senior technician, Architect).  Must have participated in several projects of different types. Site experience and / or project expense is an asset.

And finally, The BIM Coordinator supports the BIM manager in his task by helping him to accomplish certain things, like creating families etc. Most of the time he is working in production on a specific project and is the contact person for the rest of the project team for immediate support. He reports to the BIM manager for Level 2 issues (difficult problems) and Level 3 issues (BIM strategy issues). He is the Revit project champion, and the right arm of the BIM Manager.

In conclusion,  we have seen how important the tasks of a BIM Manager really are asking a position in a firm. It ensures the stability and effectiveness of the teams working in BIM. This person should not be a person fresh out of school but a person of experience. With its daily contact with users, it is essential that he is sociable and a good teacher, he knows to keep his head cool during periods of stress and he is the guardian of the company’s standards.
